THE US government is considering banning the online sales of e-cigarettes along with earlier threats to flavours, it has been revealed.
Scott Gottlieb once considered by many vapers to be of a more logical nature than previous heads of FDA when talking vaping, has revealed they are now considering flavour bans and bans to online sales of e-cigarettes. In an attempt to deter under age vaping.
This comes within a few weeks from the FDA claiming there was a youth “epidemic” of vaping. However, documentation leading them to this conclusion has yet to be made public.
Gottlieb acknowledging e-cigarettes as a safer alternative in the same breath has put a possible knife to the chance of many more smokers finding refuge in e-cigarettes.
“We’re also fully committed to the concept that products that deliver nicotine exist on a continuum of risk, with combustible products representing the highest risk, and electronic nicotine delivery systems perhaps presenting an alternative for adult smokers who still seek access to satisfying levels of nicotine, but without all of the harmful effects that come from combustion,” Gottlieb said.
“But in enabling a path for e-cigarettes to offer a potentially lower risk alternative for adult smokers, we won’t allow the current trends in youth access and use to continue, even if it means putting limits in place that reduce adult uptake of these products.”
For most smokers turned vapers tobacco flavours are the last thing they look for when starting to vape and actually are repulsive to many finally freed from cigarettes grip. This would be another blow dealt to vaping when similar laws regarding cigarettes took far longer to see the light of day.
Funnily enough Big Tobacco companies share portfolios got a boost earlier in the monthy when Gottlieb issued JUUL, Vuse, MarkTen, Blu E-cigs and Logic an ultimatum - in 60 days respond to the agency regarding their plans on how they will prevent teens from using their products.
Otherwise the FDA may ban e-liquid flavours and pull certain flavoured products from the shelves immediately. Flavours, Gottlieb believes is the "principal drivers of the youth appeal” of vape products.
Seems like all this is working for someone at least - Big Tobacco once again.
